about

BIO FOR: Ruffian
Ruffian (aka Ryan Burgdorfer) began making electronic music in 1987 using an Amiga 500 running Sonic, attempting to emulate the industrial sound of groups like Frontline Assembly and Skinny Puppy. He was introduced to Pittsburgh's fledgling rave scene in 1992 by close friend Damian Higgins (aka Dieselboy), back when modern jungle/drum and bass had not yet evolved from its slower breakbeat ancestor. Instantly drawn to the darker & harder-edged side of the genre, he began deejaying in 1994, and together with like-minded party-goer John Dwight (aka Blista) founded the event production outfit known as UDG Inc. shortly after.

For the next two-plus years, UDG Inc. threw many parties and club nights in the Pittsburgh area, becoming a driving force behind the development of the Steel City's identity as a drum and bass leader. Notable events include the infamous 'Tunnel Vision' (which took place in one of Pittsburgh's many tunnels, closed just for the party with the city's blessing), 'Freee 2' (in the Carnegie Science Center), and 'Jungle Warfare' (Pittsburgh's first all drum and bass party, a collaboration with friends Zone and Natalie).

After a long hiatus from the scene, Ruffian's interest turned once again towards producing. Previous releases include 'You Are Virus' and 'Non-Locality', both available on fizx-recordings.
